10 years in support

If you live on the UES, come support our community at the 10th Anniversary Gala of PS109 El Barrio Artspace.

This milestone Gala brings together the artists, neighbors, and supporters who helped shape El Barrio’s Artspace into a vibrant hub of artistic expression. Like every milestone, 10 years down, is the beginning of the next 10 years.

At the Gala, you will experience a curated group exhibition that  showcases standout works by standout artists from the past decade, live performances by our in-house talent, a one-of-a-kind art auction featuring original pieces, dinner, drinks and a festive after-party to close out the night.

The funds raised support the next generation of artists in El Barrio.  If you’ve been here before, it’s a heartfelt tribute to our shared journey. If you’re just joining us it’s a toast to the creativity past, present and yet to come.

Welcome.

A ground breaking

Dan Dunn is an artist whose works are a multi-media mix of performance and painting.

His work involves an audience.

His studio is the venue at which he performs his art.

Painting for him is a process during which he interacts with the attendees.

On this event, he was the featured artist for the WCM ceremonial groundbreaking for their new student residence.

He sets his creation to music and offers comic miming as he paints.

The building, located at York and 74th, is projected for a 2025 opening. His rendition was handed out as a lovely party favor and souvenir of the luncheon.

Patriotism: From the Heart

It’s the season in which we are called upon to be patriotic.

It’s the 4th of July, or thanks to the quirks of the calendar, the long 4th weekend.

This year, like any other, our allegiance to this country and its democracy should come from the heart. I know it comes from mine.

There was a time when patriotism had a rhythm. And, of course, a rhyme.

George M. Cohan gave both to the songs he wrote to honor the USA; he waved the flag hard.

The myth of his being born on the 4th makes for good storytelling, but he is really the son of the 3rd.

Watching that myth unfold is an annual tradition in our house.

It is such a thrill to sing-along with Yankee Doodle Dandy.

A truly patriotic buzz runs over me as I belt out She’s a Grand Old Flag and harmonize to Over There.

Fruity

I missed National Fruitcake Day. It started earlier today, December 27th but I feel I should have been there to commemorate it from the beginning.

Too late now at 6:15pm to show true appreciation. I jest. I cannot in any fairness celebrate. Fruitcakes- and this includes the pannetone- lack any emotional or tangy connection for me.

As Sam-I-am would have it “I do not like it” anyway it’s sliced. Heavy cakes that can double as doorstops or the Italian lightweight versions have no appeal.

The culinary imagination that decided to throw all manner of dried fruits and some nuts into a batter is foreign to me. It does not matter from which continental provenance, this cake ain’t to my liking.
