Migration stories

Punjabi Spice is around the corner from LaMaMa. It was my friend SA’s inspiration to dine there. On this evening, it’s a preamble to seeing Migration Diary: New York City. Punjabi Spice had little idea what to do with two elder ladies requiring dinner. The shop is kind of an Indian taxi driver refreshment stand posing as a full-on restaurant.• How appropriate is that? (•That is not to say that à] the staff weren’t nice, b] we enjoyed our meal, and ç] I wouldn’t consider a return visit.)

It’s Lone not love
💕shaped at a distance

Near 42nd, right across the avenue from the NYPL lions, I passed a Lovello “Permanent Jewelry” store.

A little down the road, there was a Love Korean Restaurant.

At Peacefood Union Sq, I giggled at the Both sign on the restroom door, envisioning couples going in. Not the intent, I know,  but isn’t it romantic?

On 4th Avenue & 12th, I find one more Love sign at a yogurt shop.

Speaks

Having recently had a speakeasy experience, I am alert to hidden bars.

You could easily pass this door without a thought about its late night program.

Having your name over the door technically disqualifies you or rather your joint as a speakeasy!

I include little known places like the Roreich Museum in this picture book look.

All of these are technically not secret enough to be speaks, but they harbor a mystery.

Back alleys, belowstairs steps and small doors are also mysterious. Enough for me.

At the Gala, you will experience a curated group exhibition that  showcases standout works by standout artists from the past decade, live performances by our in-house talent, a one-of-a-kind art auction featuring original pieces, dinner, drinks and a festive after-party to close out the night.

The funds raised support the next generation of artists in El Barrio.  If you’ve been here before, it’s a heartfelt tribute to our shared journey. If you’re just joining us it’s a toast to the creativity past, present and yet to come.
