Arts and activities

There is a hidden gem in Spanish Harlem that offers a peaceful cultural experience or rather experiences. It is rare and not as well-known as it justly deserves.

I apologize for the musical oldies  reference. PS109 ArtSpace is at the edge of El Barrio. It provides housing for artists, and studio spaces, as well as Salsa nights and art shows. It is gorgeous. It is pristine.

PS109 offers enough events to invite us, [you and me, everyone], to visit often.

Today, I made a repeat visit with my friend the artist LM, [we go to art  venues together] with a crew of another group of adventurers.

We were given a full tour of the galleries and other public spaces. Our friend F planned a return tonight with his wife to see a play in the little blackbox theater.

We went off to dine nearby on the recommendation of Rolinda Ramos, the director of PS109 ArtSpace El Barrio.

This is the 10th anniversary of PS109, located at 215 E 99th St, which gives you the excuse to drop by at least 10 times this year.

“The Summer of George”

A tribute

Arguably, the most annoying character on Seinfeld is… a hard pick.

Jerry Stiller’s Papa Costanza wasn’t with us consistently enough to qualify. (“Serenity now!”) Michael Richards’ krazy Kramer offset his quirky with  slapstick routines.

Who can stay mad at Julia Louis Dreyfus’ Elaine when she’s goofy or self-absorbed if she’s going to be that beautiful and charming? The title guy? Nah, he’s there to bring it all together. Besides, he often makes sense.

It’s gotta be Jason Alexander as George Costanza (“can’t stand ya.”) He’s clueless and wise.

(“Should I not have done that?” Fans can fill in the context.) He’s hapless and lucky. George is unabashed even at his most embarrassing moments. And he looks like a character out of Peanuts.

With summer approaching, let’s hear it for George. And Jerry. And…. the show about nothing.

Seinfeld is on daily on Comedy Central in the afternoons just before The Office with extended hours on Wednesdays.

Three Perfect Breakfast Sandwiches
A specimen is likely available at a bodega or a coffee cart near you, but if you want to level up, here are three of the best.

The New Yorker

A recent article in The New Yorker lauded the breakfast sandwich. Helen Rosner expounded on the joys of a perfect balance between all its components. While fascinated by her well-expressed argument, I scoffed at the idea.

A sandwich is something plus something between two pieces of bread. Breakfast is a plate of sunny eggs plus some toast with home fries.

Full disclosure requires I honestly tell you I enjoy the Starbucks 🌟 breakfast treat of an Impossible sausage many a morning. I appreciate its goodness, as I reported in the original post, but thought it was just a fast food concept.

Enter an egg on a pita from Claire’s. Ta da! Its secret sauce is tahini poured over the scrambled egg plus pickles. All of this is set deep in the pita pocket, the eggs scrambled soft against the crunch of pickle. Talk about balance. BTW, I exhort you to drink a cup of Claire’s Kimbo coffee with that, too.

As long as I am expounding and fully fessing, I should tell you that I take sunny-side up very seriously. They are eggs, and any variety is less so.

Scrambled eggs lose the yolky quality that runs over the toast and fries. Keeping an open mind is hard, but heck, the scramble in that pita is good.

What brands do you associate with?

There are things, services, and people that are good. Then there are those that are [or do] good for you. They are not necessarily branded, although this one uses an email brand that’s on point.

This article is in praise of a particular podiatrist. First, I want to thank her for the good service provided over many years.

Since feet are our transportation, you don’t want to experience unnecessary discomfort. Your podiatrist can do you a world of good.

Join me in welcoming Dr. Neda Khoobyar, myfootdoctor@gmail.com, to my immediate neighborhood.

She is moving into the medical spaces at 341 East 79th Street Suite 309 as we speak. You may want to save the welcome wagon for next week. Or give her a call or text at +12126793131.

Addendum: I visited the medical space at 341 East 79th Street (Ste 309) today and found it quaint and charming.

There are any number of professional psychologists at the location.

I attribute the bathroom design to Dr. Neda’s neighbors.

Nothing but the best

What are your top ten favorite movies?

Moonstruck

Bull Durham

A League of Their Own

Forget Paris

When Harry Met Sally

Pausing midway on the midway to think about what is truly the best in the wide history of films.

Do we count the Chaplin works like City Lights, The Great Dictator, or Modern Times. Do we look at old odd and weird classics like Metropolis? Or the horror picture from 1922, the silent Nosferatu? Do we stick to talkie times? I generally do.

Singing in the Rain [If we are still speaking of talkies]

An American In Paris

Midnight in Paris

Found objects

If you were going to open up a shop, what would you sell?

In my youth, I knew a pair of artists whose work was informed by found objects.

They scoured the streets near their Lower East Side apartment for cloth and discarded spindles and leftover thread. Cardboard and milk cartons were turned into artwork.

Recycling the leavings of their industrial neighbors was an artful endeavor in and of itself.
