We march in peace

When handed all the worst as we have in this socio-political moment, insist upon your rights.

We are not marching so much as we are rallying in protest.

The counter to the grift, graft, illegality, unConstitutionality, are demonstrations by we, the people.

MAGA, Project 2025, MAHA, Plan 47 and commencement speeches about the pitfalls of trophy wives are all unseemly, uncalled for and anti-American.

Not necessarily in that order.

Satisfaction

There is something so satisfying about batting a ball against a paddle.

Passing a playground  where there’s a person making a practice hit against the wall makes me smile. Thwack.

Pickleball with a side order of ping pong is the current rage. Recreational as well as spectator tennis is always in vogue, too.

In my heyday, I enjoyed applying a forceful racquet to a small ball for the sake of running the court. Occasionally, I had a lunchtime opponent, but generally, this was a solo exertion.

Thwack. Slam.

What’s your jam?

UES “golf course”

Exercise can take a number of forms. In the ‘burbs, you grew up on a tennis court, or poolside or at a golf course.

Your city-mouse counterpart went for jogs in Central Park or pedaled his bike to work. She may have hit the weights at a nearby gym or taken to a barre class. Lots of choices await those wanting to work out.

Aren’t so very many ways to get/stay fit enough? Chelsea Piers offers golfing for the NYC veteran, as does Five Iron Golf. At the latter,  they’ve set up a clubhouse where winners can buy a victory round. There’s probably a similar post-play locale at Chelsea Piers.

There’s basketball (and now pickleball) at your local playground; you can reserve a tennis court for singles or doubles around town, too. As the weather warms, kayakers take to the rivers, aa well.

Walk, jog, run, dance. Get out there and exercise your options today.

Nomads

There was a time in history when some of us were homebodies while others were wanderers.

Nomads moved around foraging and following game. Settlers farmed or fished (I guess) and built cities for trade and community.

Does such a division still exist between the migratory and the stay-in-place?

There are people who sit still in one place, and people who restlessly move about.

Is this ingrained and hereditary? Is it a choice or serendipity?

Of course, there are those who wander in search of fortune or improved circumstances. There are migrants forced to leave home because of political exigencies.

There are also those of us who seek our careers in one place. My story is one of mixed experiences; we once were migrants but I was young; now I choose to be a New Yorker.

They’re so good

Staying on to see Daddy Long Legs after An American in Paris accentuates a long-standing question.

Who is better? Kelly or Astaire? Which style is more exciting and innovative?

Why do we need this needless comparison? Who will heed this inconsequential debate?

Yes. We could call upon apples and oranges to end the discussion.

In fact, I think I 🤔 shall.

MRI Moves

My MR experience today inspired me to choreograph an MRI dance.

Set to the electronic pings, rings, and zings of the cocoon like machine, my dance begins with a darkened stage.

A spotlight falls on each of 3 bundled figures, lying a few feet apart.

As the scene brightens, the first dancer raises his right leg in an arc to the center of his body and over past the right.

The one in the middle sheds her wrapping and pulls up onto her toes, then flat on her heel. She turns to face the last supine figure.

He also unwraps and then rolls to his left. Cat stretch to downward dog and up slowly, sensuously allowing each vertebrae to wriggle to standing.

When all three are standing, they march in a circle that turns into a conga.

The electro-pop of the MRI sets a rhythm for their movement throughout.

Relaxing, the light follows them as they dance off.
