Smoothie

Green, with Envy

Health benefits are often a draw when foods or drinks seem off-putting.

Green is healthy; you know, like lettuce or broccoli, but in a drink… well, the color can be extreme. That said, a green smoothie can be so delicious. I will attest to the perfection of this satisfying drink.

Beets and berries contribute to the brightness of the smoothie on the right.

Red could be said to be on the other side of the color spectrum. Don’t think stop when you see this beverage in your fridge.

Seeing Red!

I would never argue against a red but I lack the subtlety of eye to recognize Viva Magenta as much different from the CNN logo or some other vibrant red.

Pantone has selected Viva Magenta as the color of the year.

Having been in a printing-adjacent biz, I value their judgment. I am also certain that they have the discernment to differentiate one red from another. It can be a close call.

One of the pleasures of working on a printing project is getting to use a Pantone color swatch book. Mine was a prized possession.

So many colors, how do I choose just one?

Laying out the colors one atop the next is a sensual pleasure I remember vividly.

My riches

For years, my attempt at keeping a plant in my home ended in brown leaves and disappointment.

I have finally found a plant that, starting as a small cutting, has done nothing but thrive. I missed my watering schedule a couple of weeks ago. It started to droop. Uh oh, that’s it, I thought, this looks familiar.

A little remedial watering and back to our schedule, a hubby who greets the perky little thing and look where we are now.

Observed today

These two illustrated vehicles both represent some good transit options. The dismantled yellow bike no doubt the better of them.

Simon is cutting hair today. Salvo’s is closed. An uneven start to finding open establishments.

I saw the first poinsettias of the season today. Wanted to shout that at the young man making the delivery but his earbudds precluded meaningful communication.

It’s warm for Thanksgiving Thursday.**

**I added the unnecessary “Thursday” in case they turn the holiday into an official long weekend. It would then come complete with its own sales day.

There are places to sit. I know I mentioned this before but Le Petit Parisien has an excellent cappuccino. You know where else the coffee’s good? My local D’Agostino. Yeah, I too was surprised.

Comes knocking

We’re an opportunistic people, we New Yorkers. 79th going east off 1st was closed for emergency vehicles on Marathon Day.

It became a playground. These boys throwing a football and the kids playing tag around NYPD trucks took hold of a great big play street.

Over 50 years of living on the starboard side of NYC’s Marathon has given 50 years of griping.

This year it felt cozy. I remembered the occasion and planned accordingly. I made my last foray to west First Avenue on Sat. evening; let them shut it off as early as 10am and the stragglers trail in late into the night.

Halloween provided the opportunity and these little horror decorators rose to the occasion. I am sure that after having worked this hard, they’d rather just wait for happenstance to take these down.

A Late Fall

Truthfully, it’s hard to judge when a season is a late arrival. Weather spikes all over the place these days.

I’ve been noting that there was a preponderance of yellow leaves which, and yes, they are beautiful, are the weaker foliage of the Fall. My conclusion today? Reds are just late to the party. At least for me the first week of November for “peak” colors just peeking out appears late.

Falling leaves

Orange or yellow leaves have been predominant this Fall.

Autumn is a lovely season with generously colored leaves gracing the crowns of trees.

Autumnal implies a weathered maturity.

It is also in the lexicon of sadness, where it suggests regrets over the changing seasons.

Before the Fall can decry an end to warm weather and revelry, it decorates our environs.

Somewhere in there, our man-made decorations creep in as we celebrate a pagan holiday.

Leaves, in pretty colors, fall to the ground, and with the nip in the air, define an end to summer.

Exercise

Spirited activity is good for body [of course] and soul [incidentally.] It comes in many formats, from just good old aerobics or push-ups & pull downs to spins on a bike, either across town or staying in place -to mention just a few.

The talented can hit tennis balls over the net or affect the butterfly stroke. The choices are wide and high. The idea is to keep moving.

Is this something new? Can’t walk your dog without stopping to give him a treat? Not something I remember from my days on a leash. Maybe that was why my pooch dragged me the last 400 yards to the supermarket.

We are so lucky to have a bee-line view to Central Park’s festivities. It’s the Friday before the Marathon and fireworks were in order.

Shorter this way

Trees are having their coming out party.

Why is it a shortcut if I cover the same distance? It definitely feels shorter when I turn on Cherokee to get 1 block down.

I still have to get from Cherokee Place to York. Why does it feel so much less arduous?

Sometimes even this longcut (sic) feels shorter.

There’s a jazz club just off 86th and Second. That’s exciting.

501 East 79th emerges

There was scaffolding shrouding this corner for ever so long. It’s a pleasant surprise having this building come out into the daylight.
