In April, we celebrate Earth Day. On June 5th, it’s a more cumbersomely named event. World Environment Day is a grandly clad observation of what is best for the Earth.
Although it’s a somber and serious project, feel free to rejoice and celebrate.

It’s increasingly apparent that leading a sedentary life is bad for the health.
When I say “the health” I mean yours and mine. But women’s health in particular. The statistics suggesting just how bad inactivity is- especially for women- are grim.
Now I recognize that this is not exactly news to any of us.
Movement is necessary.
Since the pandemic began, we’ve been introduced to a lot of online programs. We also have spent more time in our jammies and slippers.
I used a site strategically-named Fitness Blender to get in enough supervised push-ups, squats, and lunges.
With the return to a more conventional workweek, we have even fewer opportunities to stay active.
In the spirit of helping us to maintain a healthier body and mind, Melissa Painter’s women-founded Breakthru has developed an immersive, interactive app.
Breakthru: Movement Microbreaks for the Modern Workday are 2-minute long movements guided to inspire a mood.
A User’s Guide on How it Works
1. start by picking the mood you are looking for- confident, joyful, energized or centered. Each mood is accompanied by a color – the experience is interactive and multi-sensory, with spatial sound.
2. push away from the computer and follow the guide, created by motion capture from movement experts whose expertise ranges from akido, tai chi, physical therapy, yoga and dance.
There’s no right or wrong way to play- the movement of your body affects the sound and the visuals! Each mood contains a series of different break options – there is a world of movement behind each mood option, each of which hold an entire series.
Breakthru invites you to set custom reminders and allows you to see your history. It also uses interactive feedback – machine vision (AI) – so the movement of a user’s body changes the sound and visual.
You can set team challenges, send appreciation to a colleague, use Breakthru as an ice breaker in meetings, win streaks, and unlock new breaks over time.
For more information on Breakthru visit their site.

My phone seems to have a tendency toward independence.
I inquired something of a friend, and then it added 3am on its own. I sent a completely inappropriate Cool. 😎 One friend got a message that was totally gibberish.
So when the device got it into its head to make a panorama shot, I happily went along for the ride.
There’s a guarantee built into the Constitution of the United States that the newly constituted federation will pay any debts it had incurred before the founding of the Republic.
This clause brings to question why paying our duly acquired debts has become a near-yearly drama.
As Benny (Joseph Buloff) from Somebody Up There Likes Me says “pay the check.”

We’re an opportunistic people, we New Yorkers. 79th going east off 1st was closed for emergency vehicles on Marathon Day.
It became a playground. These boys throwing a football and the kids playing tag around NYPD trucks took hold of a great big play street.
Over 50 years of living on the starboard side of NYC’s Marathon has given 50 years of griping.

This year it felt cozy. I remembered the occasion and planned accordingly. I made my last foray to west First Avenue on Sat. evening; let them shut it off as early as 10am and the stragglers trail in late into the night.

Halloween provided the opportunity and these little horror decorators rose to the occasion. I am sure that after having worked this hard, they’d rather just wait for happenstance to take these down.
Millard Fillmore, remember him? Well, I hear he was head of a supremely negative political movement that was proud to call itself the Know Nothing Party.
An aside here: the fool is proud of that which the wise man finds embarrassing.
old Yugoslav expression
Ignorance goes hand in hand with the kind of pride that revels in conspiracy theories. It is the foundation on which falsehoods and misinformation [aka LIES] are built.
Along with the untruths, there is a new kind of pornography spreading in negative political advertising.
The good news for us is we can eschew the Know-Nothings and disdain far-fetched theories.
We know something; we know better.
We can use our knowledge. We can come to rational conclusions. We can be wise and principled.

Apartment dwelling is hard to get used to, even with the centuries we’ve had to adjust. And who’s to say it wouldn’t be just as loud in your suburban enclave.
Our friend, Dr. Bronzaft, answers your concerns about noise. In this podcast, she addresses the thorny issue of noisy neighbors.

A neighbor’s insistingly loud midday music was charming when I rented my first apartment.
Today it’s just intrusive.
Noise, like everything else, is relative to how receptive we are and where life has taken us.

An Indian architect tweaked artificial intelligence until it came up with some amazing structures. His story and designs can be found in this CNN piece.
In the future Manas Bhatia and the AI program he used envision us living in tree houses. Giant living breathing tree houses.
Life on Mars? Well, not exactly. There is a project called MOXIE which might make living on the planet feasible, however.
The technology involved uses artificial trees to generate oxygen, ie the air we need to breathe.
Someday, we might be living in trees and living by the grace of trees.

Okay. To be honest this is another tease.
Actually, I wanted to share an article by my friend Dr. Arline who has nothing but your best interests for a quieter and more peaceful environment.
It appears that New Yorkers have learned patience from the pandemic.
Those alternate side of the street sits are being handled with more grace and poise. Of course all the devices we own and use help. One parker had her dog at the curbside and a tablet with a board game. (Wonder if her dog plays chess.) Another waited with a newspaper and ear buds. Time appeared to be suspended for them.
Incidentally, grooming is coming back along with the mask-free look. Actually, hair and beards have been trim and neat for sometime now. There was the initial shock of the pandemic when men’s facial hair was a reflection of the chaos we all felt but then the barbers got busy.
