More about last night

Incidentally, or perhaps not so incidentally, at a dinner a couple of months ago with C., I ordered a 0 alcohol beer and got a buzz.

Truth is I have tee-totaled for a long long time. It affects one’s tolerance.

Last night, at the Beach (see my post today about “what’s going on”), I had a Heinekein 00. It was fine. I was fine. Maybe it was that second zero?

I ordered the beer on account of that’s how Taco Tuesday works. 9 dollars for three but you gotta get a drink with that.

Just in case 00 was going to make me tipsy, I squeezed limes then I added water into the glass.

Anyway, I walked home without too much swerving and I like me some non-alco beer.

My coffee trek goes on

The Fancy Kook

Kook? As in oddball? Or as in a nook? It’s a tiny space, elongated with tables well-spaced, toward the back. It’s Fancy, all right.

The cappucino I ordered is very high-priced. It was brought on a wooden tray with the tiny lovely glass of orange juice and a grand little cookie on the side. Just very elegant and perfection.

Cappucino was firm, hard-core, as strong as you want it to be.

Barkeep, I’ll have a….

Baristas like bartenders have upped the ante. The more specific drink invention gets, the more knowledge and skill they have to exercise.

So it’s blonde and flat or almond and what have you. I don’t even know how to order from these menus.

Let’s face it, complicated is fun. And adds spice.

I thought of asking my Swiss cafeista today to prepare my cappucino mit schlag.

They call it Vienesse at Sotheby’s down the block. Adding not spice but calories.

Too much of a good thing

It’s a fine line between great and more than you need. I have been illustrating the upside of BurgerFi – and the food is all tasty – but it is also uniformly caloriFIc.

Onions might count as vegetables, and I want to give ’em credit in that column, but the thick, delicious crust and gentle deepfrying belies its cred.

Chicken wings are not a diet food. I have yet to get my burger wrapped in a lettuce roll. The Beyond is the closest non-meat burger you’d want, but it too comes at a calorie cost.

In short, go and enjoy. It’s an indulgence.

Gateway (drugs)

People sometimes call alcohol a drug, especially in the hands of those who tend towards an addiction. For the sad lovers in Days of Wine and Roses, alcohol is not just a drug but seriously dangerous.

For most of us, it’s a beverage before, during, or after dinner.

Now that marijuana is legal, I have declassified its status as a drug. I won’t bore you with my last use of pot nearly a half-century ago.

It’s been ages, at any rate, since weed was hysterically labeled a gateway to major addiction like heroin. And to answer the unasked question in the ‘graph above, no, I did not develop a habit.

My friend D stopped for a visit bearing no less a goody than Kedem Sparkling Grape Juice.

All morning, I have been grappling with whether to consider this a gateway to wine or more exotically to Champagne 🍾 🤔.
